Unsurprisingly, the first famous resident in the area was named William Henderson. Unsurprisingly, the first famous resident in the area was named William Henderson. He helped settle the town and served as local postmaster before his death in 1807. Throughout the 1800s, Hendersonville remained an important trading post, especially for farmers who lived to the north of the Cumberland River and preferred not to venture all the way into the busy city of Nashville to conduct business. In the 20th century, however, everything changed for Hendersonville. In 1952, the Army Corps of Engineers began building the Old Hickory Lock and Dam, a hydroelectric power plant on the Cumberland River on the southeast side of Hendersonville.
